In the area of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language (TCFL) and the promotion of Chinese culture, BLCU has the most extended history, the largest scale, and the mostqualified academic faculty. Since its founding, the university has trained some 220,000 international students who are proficient in Chinese language and familiar with Chinese culture from 184countries and regions. Many alumni have become celebrities in various fields such as education, politics, and business. Among these talents include: Kassem Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva; Mulatu Teshome Watto, the former President of Ethiopian; Karim Massimov, Chairman of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Igor Morgulov, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Wolfgang Kubin, German Sinologist; Eric Cornell, American physicist and Nobel laureate, and others. All of the above- mentioned individuals once studied at BLCU.

BLCU has not only preserved its distinguishing features and advantages in the field of Promulgation of Chinese language and culture since the 1990s; new and related disciplines have been developed as well. BLCU’s current curriculum is composed of ninecategories: literature, economics, laws, engineering, history, education, management, fine artsand sciences, etc. Besides 2 Post-Doctoral Research Centers, there are 2 first-level disciplines with 18subordinate disciplines atdoctoral level, 6 first-level disciplines atmaster’s level and 5 professional master’s degree programs, including 1 national key discipline, 10 municipal key disciplines and 2 municipal high-tech disciplines.

BLCU has established partnerships with over 369universities and institutionsof higher learningin 73countries and regions. It has formed an international education structure with overall, multi-level and wide-ranging features. BLCU and Harvard University jointly established the Harvard-Beijing Academy. BLCU established BLCU Bangkok College in Thailand as well as Tokyo College in Japan.BLCU conducts Sino-foreign joint programs in various forms. It leads joint-degree programs atundergraduate and graduate levels with over ten foreign universities, such as Webster University and George Mason University in the U.S., Konstanz University of Applied Sciences in Germany and the University of Manchester in Britain. BLCU has co-established 18 Confucius Institutes and two independent Confucius Classrooms, and was awarded the “Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner of the Year”. In recent years, approximately 100 BLCU instructors teach overseas and more than 400 BLCU students study abroad each year. The university receives over 1500 international visitors each year as well.
